1st June 2017 will see the start of the longest running and largest Steampunk event in the Southern Hemisphere.
The Capital of Steampunk, Oamaru, will host the 8th Steampunk NZ Festival. Expect four days of full steam fashion, frivolity and fun with activities, workshops, dinners, music, racing, markets, the Steampunk NZ Fashion Show, all topped off with a gala ball.
The 4 day festival uses several venues about the town including the Oamaru Opera House. It attracts celebrity performers and international and domestic visitors who fill the town with their colourful costumes and incredible creative contraptions.
This year the Festival is working with Tourism Waitaki to officially include the Oamaru Fire and Steam event as part of the weekend. This is a community event attracting 2-3,000 people for an extravaganza of light and sound; with food stalls and entertainment all along Harbour Street and over Wansbeck Street and a parade of steampunks in full Steampunk regalia it will be a wonderful evening. Local entertainers will be joined by New Zealand celebrity Jackie Clarke, familiar to young and old through her music and performances for children around the country.
